Family Day Trips Around San Diego
As parents or caregivers, you might be hard-pressed sometimes to find quality experiences together with your kids, whether they are toddlers or teens. Turns out, getting outdoors together in nature is a great way to bond with your kids in ways that supports critical brain development. The Children and Nature Network just released a great guide to building stronger families through outdoor activity.
San Diego parents are lucky, because not only are there many terrific regional and city parks within the city limits but all kinds of adventures lie just beyond the metro area. If you're looking for fresh ideas for family outings near San Diego, starting near the ocean is always a great idea.
To the south of San Diego, the coastal wetlands, salt marshes and dunes of Tijuana River Estuarine Research Reserve and the Tijuana Slough National Wildlife Refuge protect a coastal lagoon visited by nearly 400 species of birds, including many endangered species like California brown pelicans and least terns. The visitor center for both is on the refuge. The nearby Sweetwater Marsh National Wildlife Refuge on San Diego Bay protects similar wetlands habitat and also has a visitor center. If you have an RV and you want to turn your family day trip into a camping trip with your kids, consider the Silver Strand State Beach.
At the other end of San Diego Bay, Cabrillo National Monument offers a lighthouse and museum, nature trails, whale watching (now!), and birdwatching. Just north of San Diego, Torrey Pines State Reserve and Torrey Pines State Beach protect America's rarest pine tree as well as salt marshes and waterfowl habitat. This is a great place for family hiking trips, either in the forest or along the bluff-lined beach. Pack a lunch, bring the kids, leave the dogs at home and have some fun with your family near San Diego!
