Cool Weekends in Arizona

Sure, parts of Arizona may be hot enough right now to fry an egg on a rock, but the weather is lovely in Prescott right now, and in the cool ponderosa pine forest of the same name. Visitors to the Prescott National Forest find that there's something for just about everyone.

Camping at the rustic forest campgrounds allows visitors to wake up in the morning ready to enjoy some fun at Lynx Lake or Granite Basin. Others may see these areas as base camps for penetrating deep into the wilderness along Apache Creek, Castle Creek, Granite Mountain, Juniper Mesa, Sycamore Canyon or Woodchute Wilderness. As their names promise, intrepid hikers can find cool waters, mountain breezes and enchanting high country.

If you're not into roughing it in a campground, consider renting historic Sycamore Cabin or Horsethief Cabin. If you want a day of adreneline-pumping riding, head for Hayfield Draw OHV area or Alto Pit OHV area, both of which boast hundreds of acres of motorized trails and play areas.

Please note that the parking area and restrooms at Hayfield Draw are closed due to lack of staffing. The trails remain open to vehicles shorter than 50 inches and the picnic area is likewise open. The day use fee of $5 is waived at this time. The Prescott National Forest has a great new map that shows all current recreation information.

Maps for Montana's Lolo National Forest

The Lolo National Forest covers 2.1 million acres of diverse and spectacular mountainous country. Several major tributaries to the Clark Fork River of the Columbia River Basin flow through the Forest. The Lolo offers many opportunities for viewing and learning more about nature, from conifer forests to bighorn sheep. Rivers like the Clarks Fork and many mountain streams provide some of the best trout fishing in the nation.

Visitors to the Lolo can choose among five maps, depending on what part of the forest they plan to be in. All the maps are topographic with contour intervals at 100 feet, the scale is 1:63,360 or one inch to the mile, and are printed on tear and water resistant synthetic paper.
