State Agencies: California
California State Trust Lands
The "Trust Lands" are those lands granted by the federal government to the State of California under various acts of the U.S. Congress. These lands, including the mineral resources, and the permanent fund which they have generated, are reserved for the sole benefit of the public schools and certain other designated public institutions in California. These lands are a unique form of public lands -- they are leased and sold to private parties in order to generate revenue for the communal good. In California, State Trust Lands cover 3.6 million acres.
Public access to Trust Lands for recreational use is permitted when such use does not damage or diminish the health and productivity of the land nor interfere with the legitimate rights of the existing lessee. The State Land Commission, in an effort to conserve the resources of these lands, is considering developing them for recreation and charging access fees. Educational uses of the Trust Lands such as school study sites, research activities and field trips, are not be subject to any fees.

California Wildlife & Waterfowl Management Areas
The California Game and Fish Commission is charged with managing California's wildlife resources and protecting populations. This includes operating several hatcheries state wide to support lake and stream fishing. Wildlife areas and game refuges are set aside for the propagation and protection of game species, including managing wetlands for migratory waterfowl habitat and nesting, and designating winter feeding grounds for large mammals. Hunting, fishing, and other recreational activities are usually allowed on these lands.
For additional information about the California Game and Fish Commission, and for hunting and fishing regulations, education classes, and permitting information, please visit the California Game and Fish website.
