The Corps of Engineers administers approximately 11.7 million acres of public land and water throughout the U.S. It is the largest provider of water-based recreation; 94 percent of its 459 lakes are within a two-hour drive of a major metropolitan area. The Corps' lakes include 490 recreation areas; more than half of these are managed directly by the agency.
