State Agencies: Washington
Washington Wildlife & Waterfowl Management Areas
The Washington Department of Fish & Wildlife is charged with managing Washington's wildlife resources and protecting populations. This includes operating several hatcheries state wide to support lake and stream fishing. Wildlife areas and game refuges are set aside for the propagation and protection of game species, including managing wetlands for migratory waterfowl habitat and nesting, and designating winter feeding grounds for large mammals. Hunting, fishing, and other recreational activities are usually allowed on these lands.
For additional information about the Washington Department of Fish & Wildlife, and for hunting and fishing regulations, education classes, and permitting information, please visit the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife website.

Washington State Trust Lands & State Forests
The "Trust Lands" are those lands granted by the federal government to the State of Washington under various acts of the U.S. Congress. These lands, including the mineral resources, and the permanent fund which they have generated, are reserved for the sole benefit of the public schools and certain other designated public institutions in Washington. These lands are a unique form of public lands -- they are leased and sold to private parties in order to generate revenue for the communal good. In Washington, State Trust Lands cover 3.6 million acres.
Public access to Trust Lands for recreational use is permitted when such use does not damage or diminish the health and productivity of the land nor interfere with the legitimate rights of the existing lessee. The Washington State Department of Natural Resources makes an effort to conserve the resources of these lands. Educational uses of the Trust Lands such as school study sites, research activities and field trips, are not subject to any fees.
For more information on the state trust lands in Washington, please visit the Department of Natural Resources website.
