Salmon-Huckleberry Wilderness, Oregon
View Vicinity Map Recommended Maps & Books Wilderness.net Share With a Friend
Description: 61,180-acre wilderness. The main feature is the wild and scenic Salmon River, which carves a channel right through the center of the wilderness. The Salmon River National Recreation Trail follows the river from one end of the wilderness to the other, affording avid anglers a chance to snag steelhead trout and coho salmon from the waters. Fishing for steelhead in the river from January 1 - March 31 and from May 27 - December 31. Fishing for chinook salmon and adipose-clipped coho salmon from May 27 - December 31.
If your interest lies elsewhere, about 60 miles of trails do not follow the river, but lead through the dense hemlock, fir, and cedar forests, offering the hiker a chance to examine such volcanic remnants as cliffs, pinnacles, and knobs, formed by ancient lava flows. The backcountry is winter range for large game animals, such as bear and mule deer.
Location: Best access from Green Canyon campground. Less convenient access, on the south side of the wilderness, from Trillium Lake campground, Abbott Road, and Linney Creek Road.
