New Outdoor Recreation Maps for New Mexico
A new series of outdoor recreation maps for the state of New Mexico has been published by the Albuquerque-based Public Lands Interpretive Association.
The series of six maps provide detailed road information on a shaded relief base, show recreation sites in national forests, BLM and state lands, national parks and monuments, wildlife refuges, land ownership (public and private), hunting units and other jurisdictional boundaries, special management units such as wilderness areas, GPS grids, campgrounds, museums, and other attractions. The scale of the maps is 1:375,000. The reverse side of each map provides general information about public lands, helpful hints, rules and regulations, land use ethics, emergency and contact numbers and outdoor destination opportunities available in New Mexico.
The maps were developed with the cooperation of federal and state agencies explained a spokesperson for the Association. “We felt there was a need for affordable maps to outdoor destinations in New Mexico; maps that had the latest and most reliable information about where to go and how to get there.”

28 Jul 2010 Summer Adventures on Backcountry Roads
Summer is coming to an end but there is still plenty time to visit the vast public lands of the West: more than 350 million acres of national forests and BLM-managed lands that stretch from Alaska to Mexico, from the Pacific Ocean to the Great Plains. Exploring these spectacular back roads by ATV, SUV or some other, preferably 4WD vehicle will lead you to ghost towns, abandoned mines, and great places for camping, hiking, ATVing, or mountain biking.
Public lands are America’s playground—go outdoors and enjoy them! To help you find those public lands you will need maps. BLM color coded surface management maps are the only ones to show public, private, state, or tribal lands. At 1:100,000 scale they show topography, hydrology and, most importantly, all those back country roads you may be looking for.
Forest Service recreation maps show numbered roads and trails within the forest, and also campgrounds. If you plan to ride your ATV or other motorized vehicles on national forests, make sure you have both a Forest recreation map and a Motor Vehicle Use Map. Forest roads throughout the West have been recently re-classified to allow for certain uses only; you may be fined if driving down the wrong road. Links to existing Motor Vehicle Use Maps are provided on this website; they can also be ordered free of charge from Forest Service district offices.
