Description: 5000-7300 foot elevation. 28,750 acre reserve offers winter range for big game, rising from upland desert through juniper communities to high slopes forested with firs and aspen. Riparian areas are found at the bottom of lava-rimmed canyons. About 3000 elk, 50 moose, and 3000 mule deer find nutritious forage here in the winter. Sharp-tailed grouse display and breeding sites are also managed and protected. Sharp-tailed grouse and partridge are common in the sage desert, blue and ruffed grouse in the woodlands, and songbirds in the riparian areas. The dry, hot climate also provides prime reptile habitat for a range of snakes and lizards. When water levels permit, fishing for cutthroat, brook, and brown trout. Camping in designated areas only. Day hiking and horse riding while wildlife viewing. Hunting for big game, small game, and upland birds.
