Description: 61,510 acres. From the sagebrush meadows of the Gunnison basin, this wilderness rises above 12,000 feet to the heights of Calf Creek and Cannibal Plateaus, where you can enjoy views of the San Juan mountains to the south and the West Elk range to the north. Cannibal Plateau is named to commemorate the ill-fated Alferd Packer expedition, when Packer ate his five companions to survive while lost in these cold and remote mountains.
Location: Trailhead access south of CO 149, east of Powderhorn, and from County Road 5, south of Powderhorn.
